Acne

Dealing with acne can be frustrating, whether it’s a breakout or a more persistent concern, it can affect how you feel as much as how your skin looks. The good news is, the right skincare can make a real difference. When selecting skincare to manage acne, look for formulations that balance clarity with care: cleansers, serums, moisturisers and spot treatments that are non-comedogenic, pH-balanced, and use clinically supported actives at safe but effective levels. Key ingredients to keep an eye out for include salicylic acid (for exfoliation of pores), niacinamide (for calming inflammation and regulating oil), benzoyl peroxide (for bacteria control), azelaic acid (for both pigment and microbial balance), gentle retinoids (for accelerating cell turnover), and soothing agents like ceramides, panthenol or aloe to support the barrier. What ingredients should I look for in acne skincare?

Some of the most effective ingredients in skincare that targets acne include salicylic acid (oil-soluble, good for exfoliating inside pores), benzoyl peroxide (antibacterial), niacinamide (anti-inflammatory, regulates sebum), azelaic acid (brightening, antibacterial, good for sensitive skin), gentle retinoids (encourages cell turnover), and barrier-supporting agents like ceramides, panthenol, hyaluronic acid. Non-comedogenic and gentle formulas are key.

Can I use retinoids and salicylic acid together?

In many cases yes, but carefully. Using both can increase irritation, so it’s best to introduce one at a time (e.g. alternate nights), use lower concentrations initially, and always follow with a soothing moisturiser. If irritation occurs, we recommend you reduce frequency or drop back to only one active until skin adjusts.

How long before I see results?

Realistically, you may start noticing some improvements (less congestion, calmer inflammation) within 4–6 weeks, but full effects (less scarring, more even tone) often take 8–12 weeks or more of consistent use. Acne is cyclical, so patience and perseverance are important.

Will these products dry out my skin?

Some active acne ingredients (e.g. benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids) can cause dryness or flaking, particularly early on when you introduce them into your skincare routine. That’s why it’s important to pair them with hydrating, barrier-repairing ingredients (like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, panthenol) and to avoid over-stripping or over-exfoliating.

Can I use acne products if I have sensitive skin?

Yes, but choose lower potency or ‘gentle’ versions of actives (for example, azelaic acid instead of high-strength BPO, or low-percentage salicylic acid). Patch testing is something we recommend. Introduce new actives slowly, and use a calming base (moisturisers, barrier support) alongside.

Do I still need sunscreen with acne products?

Absolutely. Many acne actives make your skin more sensitive to UV exposure, increasing the risk of pigmentation or irritation. Use a broad-spectrum SPF (ideally SPF 30+ or 50) every morning, and if possible, choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen.

Will these products clear my acne permanently?

Acne is multifactorial (hormones, genetics, diet, microbiome, etc.), so no single skincare product guarantees permanent clearance. However, a consistent, thoughtfully formulated routine dramatically improves control. Some people also need adjunctive treatments (dermatologist interventions, lifestyle/diet tweaks).

Can I use these acne products alongside my other skincare (vitamin C, peptides, etc.)?

Generally yes, but we recommend that you should introduce new actives slowly and monitor for any irritation.. Some combinations (e.g., high-dose vitamin C + strong acids) may be too aggressive together for some people. It’s often wise to layer milder actives in the morning and reserve stronger ones (e.g. retinoids) for night.

Are acne products safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Some acne actives are less studied in pregnancy (like high-dose retinoids). During pregnancy or breastfeeding, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider, doctor or dermatologist. Safer alternatives like lower-strength azelaic acid or gentle cleansers are often preferred.

How should I layer my acne skincare?

A typical order for acne skincare is: gentle cleanser → (toner / mild exfoliant if used) → active serum / treatment (salicylic, BPO, azelaic, retinoid) → hydrating / barrier-repair moisturiser → sunscreen (in morning). At night, please skip sunscreen and allow treatments + repair creams. Always let each layer absorb before applying the next to avoid dilution or pilling.
