What is the ideal skincare routine for my tween or teen?

We recommend a simple, three-step routine:

  1. Cleanse twice daily with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove dirt and excess oil.
  2. Moisturise with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer suitable for their skin type.
  3. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 (feel free to jump to SPF 50 though) every morning to protect against UV damage.

This approach helps maintain healthy skin without overwhelming it with unnecessary products.

Why is daily sunscreen important for young skin?

Daily application of broad-spectrum sunscreen protects skin against harmful Australian UV rays, which can cause premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Even on cloudy days or during indoor activities, UV exposure can occur, making daily SPF application essential. The younger we can start our kids on a daily sunscreen application, the earlier we can help protect their skin and prevent any damage from occurring.

Should my teen use products with active ingredients like retinol or salicylic acid?

For tweens and teens, we suggest that it’s best to avoid potent active ingredients like retinol, which can cause irritation to their skin. However, for acne-prone skin, products containing salicylic acid, topical antibiotics, topical retinol, niacinamide and azelaic acid can be beneficial when used appropriately. If you need to find the right products for your teen’s acne-prone skin, we’re of course here to help.

How can I help my teen avoid skincare mistakes influenced by social media trends?

There’s so much content out there and therefore tweens and teens can be easily influenced. It’s important to educate your teen about the importance of a simple, effective skincare routine and the potential risks of following unverified trends. Encourage them to book an appointment with us, or to chat to beauty experts IRL (in real life) before trying new products, and emphasise that more products don't necessarily equate to better skin health.

What should I do if my tween or teen experiences skin irritation or breakouts?

If your teen or tween experiences persistent skin issues, it's important to book an appointment at our clinic. We can provide personalised advice and recommend suitable products and skin treatments to address specific concerns without causing further irritation.
