Skin Needling: Everything You Need to Know Before You Book

written by Bronagh Spence

Skin needling has a bit of a reputation for sounding scarier than it actually is.

Yes, there are tiny needles involved. No, we’re not talking about medieval torture. And while the treatment creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin, that is precisely the point. These tiny injuries kick-start the skin’s natural repair response, encouraging the production and remodelling of collagen and elastin.

The result? Skin that can look smoother, firmer, brighter and more refined over time.

But skin needling isn't simply a treatment for “getting a glow”. It can be a seriously clever option for tackling concerns such as acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, pigmentation and early signs of ageing. At Skin Collective, every treatment starts with understanding what your skin actually needs, because there’s no prize for treating a problem you don't have.

So, what does skin needling do?

Also known as microneedling or Collagen Induction Therapy, skin needling uses a device fitted with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

Your skin responds by going into repair mode.

This stimulates collagen and elastin production and encourages tissue remodelling. As that process continues, the structure and quality of the skin can gradually improve. And importantly, the benefits don't necessarily stop when you walk out of the clinic. Collagen remodelling can continue for months following treatment.

Think of it less as a quick fix and more as giving your skin a very strategic nudge in the right direction.

The benefits of skin needling

This is where things get interesting. Skin needling can be used to target several concerns at once, making it a particularly versatile treatment.

Smoother, more refined skin texture

Rough, uneven or bumpy texture can make skin look dull, regardless of how much serum you throw at it. Skin needling encourages new collagen formation and skin remodelling, helping create a smoother, more even-looking surface.

Firmer, more resilient-looking skin

Collagen and elastin are responsible for much of the skin's structure and elasticity. As we age, production naturally declines. Skin needling works with your body's own repair processes to encourage new collagen and elastin, helping improve the appearance of firmness and elasticity.

A fresh approach to acne scarring

Acne can disappear long before the evidence does.

For anyone left with indented or uneven acne scarring, skin needling can help remodel scar tissue and improve the appearance of skin texture. It isn't about erasing scars overnight – because, sadly, skincare doesn't have a delete button – but a tailored course of treatments can make a meaningful difference to how scars look and feel over time.

It's also important to understand that not every scar is the same. The type, depth and location of your scarring will influence which treatment approach is most appropriate.

Refined-looking pores

Large-looking pores are often more noticeable when the surrounding skin lacks firmness or has an uneven texture. By encouraging collagen production and improving overall skin quality, skin needling can help pores appear more refined.

Brighter, more even-looking skin

Skin needling can also be incorporated into treatment plans for uneven skin tone and pigmentation. However, pigmentation requires a considered approach – particularly for skin prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation. This is one of the reasons your consultation matters.

Is skin needling painful?

Let's address the elephant in the treatment room.

Skin needling isn't completely sensation-free, but most clients find it very manageable. At Skin Collective, the level of discomfort is generally rated around 3/10 without local anaesthetic, although everyone's pain threshold is different.

Your practitioner can talk you through what to expect before treatment, including whether anaesthetic is appropriate for your individual treatment plan.

What happens during a skin needling treatment?

First, your skin is assessed and prepared according to your individual concerns. This is important because skin needling isn't a one-depth-fits-all treatment.

The SkinPen device is then used to create controlled microchannels in the skin. The depth and treatment approach are tailored to the area being treated and what we're trying to achieve.

Afterwards, your skin may look a little pink, think post-exercise flush rather than tomato-red emergency. Some clients experience redness and swelling for a few days, while temporary dryness, tightness, peeling or mild crusting can also occur as the skin recovers.

And then the clever part begins: the skin gets to work repairing and remodelling.

How many skin needling treatments will I need?

There isn't a universal number because your skin isn't a universal skin.

For many concerns, Skin Collective typically recommends a course of three treatments spaced around 4–6 weeks apart. Your practitioner will assess your skin and create a treatment plan based on your concerns, skin condition and desired outcome.

If you're treating acne scarring, for example, your plan may look different from someone coming in primarily for general skin rejuvenation.

What should I do after my skin needling appointment?

Post-treatment care matters. Your skin has just been deliberately stimulated, so now is not the time to throw every active in your bathroom cabinet at it.

Keep things gentle, focus on hydration and follow the specific aftercare provided by our Skin Collective team. Most importantly, be diligent with SPF. Your skin is more vulnerable after treatment, and protecting it from UV exposure is an essential part of supporting your results.

Our Skin Collective team will also let you know when to reintroduce active ingredients such as retinoids and exfoliating acids.

Can skin needling be combined with other treatments?

Potentially, yes, and this is where our personalised treatment planning gets really interesting.

Depending on your skin and goals, skin needling may form part of a broader treatment plan alongside regenerative or skin-supporting treatments. At Skin Collective, we offer a long list of treatments such as LED Therapy,  PRP, Rejuran and Meso Needling, but whether combining treatments is appropriate depends entirely on your skin and the timing of each treatment.

More treatments does not automatically equal better skin. The right combination, at the right time, is what matters.

Is skin needling right for you?

If you're dealing with acne scarring, uneven texture, enlarged pores, fine lines, loss of firmness or skin that simply isn't looking as smooth and healthy as you'd like, skin needling could be worth exploring.

But here's our biggest tip: don't book a treatment just because TikTok told you to.

Come in for a consultation.

We'll look at your skin properly, talk through your concerns and work out whether skin needling is the right treatment, or whether something else would make more sense. Sometimes the best treatment plan is the one that doesn't involve doing everything at once.

And honestly? Your skin will probably thank us for that.
